The Salmon’s Call is a powerful documentary that explores the intricate spiritual and cultural relationship between wild salmon and Indigenous people that has lasted centuries. It is told through an Indigenous lens and gives a unique voice to this vital symbol of renewal, transformation, and resilience.
ABOUT
Joy Haskell (she/her) is a talented Indigenous Filmmaker based in Vancouver, BC, known for her dynamic contributions to the film industry. Re-elected for a second term on the Canadian Media Producers Association BC Branch Council, Joy also actively participates in the Indigenous Working Group. She served as First Nations Producer on Yukon Rescue with Big Time Decent Productions, which airs on The History Channel and STACK TV. Joy was a director shadow on Season 6 of the popular Netflix show Virgin River for episodes 9 and 10.

In 2020, Joy founded Firediva Productions, an independent film company that has an exciting slate of original television series in development, including Greyfeather, Dead Serious, and others. Joy has completed work on her documentary The Salmon’s Call in collaboration with Cedar Island Films and can be seen on KNOW as of June 2025.
With a proven track record as a writer, director, and producer, Joy has established a reputation as a versatile multi-hyphenate creative and an effective leader. Her projects masterfully blend comedy and drama, offering sharp social commentary and distinctive narratives that captivate audiences through compelling characters. Joy's innovative and empathetic leadership style reflects her commitment to uplifting communities and enacting meaningful change through storytelling.

Starting her artistic journey in theatre, Joy specialized in acting, singing, and dancing. She is an alumna of prestigious programs such as Reelworld E20, Warner Media, the Canadian Academy Directors Program for Women, and Women in The Director's Chair.

Joy's also has a production company, Happy Heart Studios, in collaboration with Matt Shewchuk (Big Time Decent), is currently developing new projects, including an original TV series and a factual docuseries.
